Pune<\/b> (Maharashtra) [India], April 4:<\/strong> <\/span>For four-year-old Ovi Mungse, life took an extraordinary turn when a life-threatening medical condition was met with unwavering expertise, determination, and compassion. Ovi had been suffering from a\u00a0large bronchogenic cyst<\/strong>\u2014an abnormal, fluid-filled growth measuring\u00a06\u00d74 cm<\/strong>, located in an extremely delicate region of her chest.<\/p>\n

Bronchogenic cysts<\/strong>\u00a0are rare congenital abnormalities that develop during foetal lung formation. These cysts arise from abnormal budding of the foregut and are typically lined with respiratory epithelium. While many remain small and asymptomatic, some can grow significantly, compressing surrounding organs and leading to severe complications. In Ovi\u2019s case, the cyst exerted dangerous pressure on several\u00a0vital structures<\/strong>, including the\u00a0major arteries of her heart, the trachea, left bronchi, and oesophagus<\/strong>, causing frequent breathing difficulties and recurrent episodes of pneumonia. If left untreated, such cysts can lead to\u00a0airway obstruction, lung infections, and even life-threatening respiratory distress<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The severity of Ovi\u2019s condition was exacerbated by the\u00a0cyst\u2019s large size and location<\/strong>. While\u00a0bronchogenic cysts are congenital<\/strong>, it is uncommon for them to expand to such an extent. Immediate surgical intervention was imperative; however, the complexity of the procedure and its\u00a0substantial cost of\u00a0<\/strong>\u20b9<\/strong>4,55,000<\/strong>\u00a0posed significant barriers. Ovi\u2019s family, struggling with financial hardship, could not afford the surgery, making their daughter\u2019s future uncertain.<\/p>\n

Recognising the urgency of the situation,\u00a0Jehangir Hospital<\/strong>\u00a0stepped forward to provide both hope and world-class medical care. Leading the effort was\u00a0Dr Smruti Hindaria<\/strong>, a distinguished\u00a0cardiac surgeon<\/strong>\u00a0renowned for her expertise in intricate and high-risk procedures. Given the cyst\u2019s close proximity to vital organs, the surgery presented formidable challenges. However, with\u00a0remarkable precision and skill<\/strong>, Dr Hindaria, supported by the hospital\u2019s\u00a0highly experienced surgical team<\/strong>, successfully removed the cyst\u2014paving the way for Ovi\u2019s recovery and a healthier future.<\/p>\n

Dr Smruti Hindaria<\/strong>,\u00a0Cardiovascular Surgeon at Jehangir Hospital<\/strong>\u00a0said, \u201cCardiothoracic surgery in kids is a big challenge as operating space is limited and structures are very delicate. Given the location of the cyst abutting great arteries of the heart and airways on the left side, it was performed with utmost precision to avoid damage to surrounding structures and nerves. The kid was very resilient and did well postop. We aim to provide cardiac surgical support to as many kids as possible through this program<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet, the hospital\u2019s commitment extended far beyond the operating theatre. Recognising the family\u2019s financial constraints, the\u00a0Social Services Department<\/strong>\u00a0worked tirelessly to ensure that cost would not become a barrier to Ovi\u2019s treatment. Thanks to the\u00a0generosity of charitable trusts and donors<\/strong>, the full cost of the surgery was covered, with the family required to pay only for post-operative medication.<\/p>\n

Today,\u00a0Ovi breathes freely<\/strong>, unburdened by the life-threatening pressure that once cast a shadow over her young life. Her successful recovery stands as a\u00a0testament to the power of expert medical care, unwavering compassion, and the kindness of those willing to help<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Mungse family<\/strong>\u00a0expressed their\u00a0profound gratitude<\/strong>\u00a0to everyone who played a role in Ovi\u2019s journey\u2014from\u00a0Dr Hindaria and her surgical team<\/strong>\u00a0to the\u00a0generous benefactors<\/strong>\u00a0whose support made the operation possible.
